Christmas Sketches Part 2 – Guns ‘N’ Roses

Great Hera! Let's Make a Comic!

Because in this blog, I’ll be talking about weapon and vegetation designs.

For the guns, I used militaryfactory.com and located the most bizarre looking 1940s weapons and borrowed their designs, namely the Blyskawica SMG, the Carl Gustav M/45, the FP-45 and the Flame Thrower Portable No.2. Reproductions below.

So far this has been about as far as I’ve gone with the weaponry, but I’m thinking of tweaking the designs a little and adding some ornamentation in the form of animal heads etc.

For vegetation, I wanted a sort of Vietnam vibe, but opted instead for a mix of different Asian jungles. I’m not a fan of drawing trees, so, to make it interesting, I started designing a tree that had evolved to grow from bones. I don’t know why.

I used a brush pen for the shaded sides and bottom of the branches, and then an 0.8/0.5 for outlines and shading…

WEEK FIVE: SCRIPTING

Great Hera! Let's Make a Comic!

There won’t be many (i.e. there will be one) picture this week, because it’s reading week, and I’m currently separated from my scanner. However, do take note of all the 1940s guns in aforementioned picture, but because I spent about five seconds researching the different types and I need affirmation.

But who needs pictures when you have the scripting process??

As a Creative Writing graduate, scripting is probably going to be the highlight of my comics creation process. I love drawing, but there’s nothing quite like writing. Especially this early on in the process, when you have plenty of drafts ahead of you to get it right, and so it doesn’t matter if it’s wrong. It’s all about the love of finding your characters and story. It’s about writing jokes and thinking about what effect it will have on the reader.

If you ignore the fact that Mocha is completely out of proportion to the other members of the band, it's not bad at all! This was drawn specifically to experiment with colouring. As you can see, I never got round to it. If you ignore the fact that Mocha…

WEEK ONE – GETTING STARTED

Interested in more Comic related scribblings?? Then follow my new blog ‘Great Hera! Let’s Make a Comic’ (succinct isn’t my style dawg). Each week it will update with my attempts to make a comic. Sounds simple cause it is. Enjoy.

Great Hera! Let's Make a Comic!

I already have a rough idea of the story I want to submit for my ‘Creating Comics’ module, which I’ll discuss next week, but suffice to say its a sort of ‘Spice World Meets Starship Troopers‘.

This week I focused on drawing my four main characters, and starting to develop their personalities.

The first sketch was of Mocha, the Victoria Beckham/Cheryl Cole of my futuristic girl band – not the best singer, but the one who’s hot stuff and is going to have the solo career after the band’s demise.

Mocha Sketch1

An idea I’m playing with in this sketch is that the weaponry of the universe utilises human energy – hence the plug into Mocha’s heart.

While I’m sketching, I’m also trying to find a look for the comic. Mocha’s got quite a cruel and angular look, but the other characters softened considerably.

The next character was Tessa/Tammy (I…

Coraline

A comparison/review of the film and book of Coraline, for the MMU novella blog. How do they stack up? What did I like/dislike about the film. If you care, click the link!

If you’re on a roll, also check out my Stepford Wives article, which can be found here.

And have a great day, because I don’t think people get wished that enough.

Stepford Wives

A comparison of the two Stepford Wives film adaptations that I wrote for the MMU Novella Award blog. Ira Levin’s fantastic novella is one of my all time favourite books. Ask me nicely and I’ll tell you the other three. 😉

The Lego Movie: Not Just Another Brick in the Wall of CGI Films

Review of The Lego Movie for http://venusfrommars.wordpress.com

VENUS FROM MARS

The Lego Movie , I confess, kinda snuck up on me.

I’d been mildly interested in it for a while, as the film marks the first cinematic appearance of Wonder Woman, like ever. Seriously. Don’t think too much about how the inaugural appearance on the big screen of the most famous and arguably the most beloved female superhero is a cameo in a film about bricks.

Still a better Wonder Woman incarnation than Man of Steel 2. Still a better Wonder Woman incarnation than Man of Steel 2.

The film didn’t sound particularly promising on paper, but I decided to give it go. It was Valentine’s Day after all, and nothing says ‘I love you’ like Lego.

The Lego Movie centres on main character Emmett, a fairly ordinary little dude, just another smiley face in the contented crowd of the City. However, a chance encounter with Wild Style, a Master Builder (those who can manipulate Lego without the instructions), leads Emmett…

Hyperbole and a Half

VENUS FROM MARS

‘Who the fuck does this goose think it is? It thinks it can waltz into my home, bite everyone, and then proceed to claim ownership of my couch and DVD player?’

If you didn’t find that funny, then, no, don’t check your pulse, check where you are on The Better Pain Scale, because you must be at 11 or higher to not care about the brilliantly surreal humour of Allie Brosh.

Brosh’s hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half is a wonderful mix of words and shitty computer paintings that creates a portal through which you can experience the Narnia of her life.

Yes, Narnia. Because it’s fun, magical, but there is also some seriously dark shit lurking in that winter.

The blog is essentially a memoir, but the sort of memoir that would make studying memoirs fun (sorry Henry Thoreau). It is also crammed with surreal deviations, frustrations at…

You Should Be Watching: Steven Universe

VENUS FROM MARS

If you have any interest in animation, you’ve undoubtedly come across Pendleton Ward’s acclaimed show Adventure Time.

Some of the best moments on Ward’s beautiful brainchild have come courtesy of Rebecca Sugar, background artist turned storyboard artist, writer and composer. Sugar was one half of the dynamic writing team that provided us with such awesome moments as ‘It Came from the Nightosphere’, ‘Fiona and Cake’ and ‘Power Animal’ (a personal favourite).

After Season 4, Sugar left Adventure Time to work on her own show. And it’s a lady first! Sugar is the first woman to create a show for Cartoon Network Studios.

Steven Universe revolves around a character based on her younger brother… and that is where I snoozed off as well. Thankfully, I gave it a chance, and was immediately sucked in by the theme song.

I mean, that’s just adorable!

And then comes the fantastic set up- Garnet…
